About

šŸ‘‹ Hello, World! I’m Mahyar (/ˈma’h:īƤr/)

I’m fascinated by intelligence: both the kind that evolved over millions of years in our brains, and the kind we’re building in machines. That fascination has taken me on a pretty wild ride through neuroscience, machine learning, and computer vision.

Right Now

I’m at Microsoft in Sydney, busy with vision and language AI models. Think computer vision meets natural language processing, with all the interesting challenges that come with making these systems actually work in the real world šŸ¤–.

The Journey So Far

I’ve bounced around different corners of AI, always chasing problems that matter:

CoTreat AI: Built computer vision systems that help dentists spot problems they might miss. Turns out, teaching machines to read X-rays is harder than it looks 🦷.

Provectus Algae: Led the ML team to help discover natural molecules from microalgae. Yes, algae. It’s cooler than it sounds šŸ€šŸ§¬.

Auckland Bioengineering Institute: Worked at the intersection of AI and bioengineering, which is exactly as interdisciplinary and chaotic as you’d imagine. One of my favourite times in my career that I miss a lot.

Soul Machines: Helped build digital humans. The experience was unreal and amazing.

Aider: Built systems that connect NLP with actual business needs, because what’s the point of cool tech if nobody can use it?

Research & Collaboration

I still collaborate with the Auckland Bioengineering Institute šŸ“š, working with Prof. Sir Peter Hunter on physics-constrained machine learning. I’ve recently worked with Oxford’s Bogacz Group on predictive coding - basically trying to understand how our brains predict what’s coming next and why that matters for AI.

Beyond the Screen

When I’m not staring at code or thinking about science, I’m probably on stage šŸŽ. I’ve done theatre and film work in Auckland and Sydney. Turns out, understanding human emotion is useful whether you’re training neural networks or playing a character. Check out some of my acting work here.

My Acting Journey

Acting is one of my greatest passions outside of my professional career. I’ve had the pleasure of performing in various theatre productions in Auckland and Sydney.
